I accidentally formatted my Seagate external hard drive and need help with data recovery. I haven’t saved anything new to it since the format, but I’m not sure which recovery software or steps are safest to try without making the lost files harder to recover.
First thing I’d do is stop using the Seagate drive for now. Don’t copy anything to it, don’t format it, and don’t keep reconnecting it over and over unless you’re actively checking something. If Windows says the drive needs to be formatted, or your files suddenly disappeared, the data may still be there. The problem is that the drive or Windows may have marked that space as usable, so new writes can make recovery harder or impossible.
Do a basic health check before running scans. Plug it in and listen to it for a bit. If it’s clicking, grinding, repeatedly spinning up and down, or making sounds it never made before, I wouldn’t try DIY recovery software first. That can make a failing drive worse. In that case, check Seagate’s Rescue Data Recovery Services and look up your serial number, since some Seagate drives include Rescue coverage for a limited period.
If it sounds normal, there’s a better chance this is a file system issue. That’s common when an external drive shows as RAW, asks to be formatted, disappears from File Explorer, or was unplugged without ejecting. Windows may not be able to read it normally, but recovery tools may still see the files.
For a DIY attempt, I’d use recovery software from another drive, not from the Seagate itself. Don’t install anything onto the drive you’re trying to recover. Install it on your internal drive or a different external drive. Disk Drill is a reasonable option for this kind of Seagate external drive problem, especially if the drive is detected but the partition looks wrong.
If the drive seems even a little unstable, make a disk image first. Disk Drill has a byte-to-byte backup option, which lets you copy the whole drive into an image file. Then you can unplug the original Seagate drive and scan the image instead. That’s safer than hammering the actual drive with a long recovery scan.
A few practical steps:
- Try a different USB cable and another USB port if the drive is not detected. Bad cables are more common than people think.
- Check Windows Disk Management if it does not show in File Explorer.
- If Disk Management shows the correct size, like 2TB or 5TB, recovery software may still be able to scan it.
- Preview files before recovering them. If photos, videos, or documents preview properly, that’s a good sign.
- Recover files to a different drive. Never save recovered files back onto the same Seagate drive.
Once you get the important files back, don’t just assume the drive is fine. Download SeaTools from Seagate and run the Long Generic Test. If it fails, replace the drive. If it passes, you can format and reuse it, but I’d still keep another backup from now on.
Large external drives can take a long time to scan, so don’t panic if it sits there for hours. If the drive still powers on, sounds normal, and shows up with the right capacity, you’ve got a decent shot at recovering the files.
If it was a quick format, your odds are decent, but don’t expect the recovered drive to come back neatly exactly as it was. Some tools may find the files but lose folder names, original filenames, or sort everything by file type, so have another drive with plenty of free space ready before you start. I agree with the “don’t write to it” advice, but I’d be careful about running several different scanners one after another on the actual Seagate. Pick one reasonable tool, scan once, preview what matters, and recover to a separate disk. Disk Drill is fine if it sees the drive correctly, but if the missing data is really important, image the drive first or stop and price a lab before turning this into a weekend experiment.
Do not run chkdsk, “scan and fix,” partition repair, or anything that promises to fix the drive in place. Those tools are for a drive you’re willing to modify. In a recovery situation, they can write new file system data over the old stuff you’re trying to get back.
The earlier advice about not saving anything to the Seagate is the big rule, but I’d separate “recover files” from “make the drive usable again.” A lot of people mix those up. Your first goal is not to repair the Seagate. Your first goal is to copy the missing files somewhere else. After that, you can erase, test, repartition, or throw the drive in a drawer.
The exact kind of format matters too. If you did a quick format, recovery is usually still possible because most of the file contents may still be sitting there. If you did a full format and let it finish, especially on newer Windows versions, that may have overwritten a lot more data. Not always worth panicking over, but it changes expectations. Quick format: decent chance. Full format: much worse.
A caveat I don’t see mentioned enough: don’t “restore the partition” as your first move unless you really know what was there before. Some tools can find old partitions and offer to put them back. That sounds tempting because it feels cleaner than recovering files one by one, but if the tool guesses wrong, you can make the mess harder to untangle. File recovery to a different disk is usually the safer first pass.
If the drive is healthy and shows the correct size, I’d do this:
- Leave the Seagate alone until you have another drive with enough free space.
- If the data matters, make an image of the whole Seagate first.
- Scan the image if possible, not the original drive.
- Recover only to a different drive.
- Check recovered files before wiping or reusing the Seagate.
Disk Drill can work fine for this kind of “oops, formatted it” case, especially if you want something with a friendlier interface. The honest caveat is that no recovery app magically puts everything back perfectly. You may get folders back, or you may get a pile of recovered files sorted by type. Photos and videos often recover better than software projects, mail archives, databases, or anything made of lots of small linked files.
If you care about filenames and folder structure, try a scan mode that looks for the old file system first, not just a deep scan by file signatures. Deep scans are useful, but they often find “file000123.jpg” type results because they’re carving files out of raw data. That’s better than losing the file, but it’s annoying when you had years of folders organized already.
Another thing to watch for is encryption. If the drive was using BitLocker, Seagate Toolkit password protection, or some other encrypted volume, random recovery scans may show junk or find very little unless the recovery tool can see the decrypted volume correctly. In that case, don’t keep poking at it blindly. Figure out the encryption setup first.
If these are replaceable downloads, photos already in cloud storage, or stuff that would only be mildly annoying to lose, DIY recovery is reasonable. If it’s business records, family photos with no backup, or anything you’d pay serious money to get back, stop earlier rather than later and talk to a recovery lab. The cheapest mistake is doing nothing for a day while you decide. The expensive mistake is running five tools, repairing the partition table, then realizing the first scan had the best shot.
Expect this to be a salvage job, not an undo button. If it was a quick format and nothing new was written, there’s a fair chance a lot of the data is still there, but the “same folders exactly as before” result is not guaranteed. Sometimes you recover the important files but lose the neat organization.
A small thing people forget: make sure the drive you recover to is ready before you scan for hours. It should have more free space than the amount you expect to recover, and it should be formatted in a way that can handle your files. For example, FAT32 is a bad choice if you have big video files because of the 4GB file size limit. Use another NTFS or exFAT drive if you’re on Windows and dealing with mixed file sizes.
I’d treat Disk Drill or any similar recovery tool as a read-only finder first. Let it scan, preview a few files that actually matter, then recover a sample batch to a different disk and open them. Don’t buy, repair, rebuild, or wipe anything until you’ve seen real files open correctly. A scan that shows thousands of filenames is encouraging, but it doesn’t mean the contents are all intact. If the preview looks good, continue. If everything previews broken or the drive starts dropping offline, stop there and don’t keep grinding away at it.
