I just got a pair of AirPods and I can’t figure out how to turn on noise cancellation or tell if it’s working. I’ve tried changing settings on my iPhone, but outside noise still comes through, and I need this feature for commuting and work calls. Looking for simple steps to set up AirPods noise cancellation correctly.
If noise canceling isn’t doing much, first make sure your AirPods even support it. Only AirPods Pro, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods 4 with ANC, and AirPods Max have Active Noise Cancellation. Regular AirPods 1, 2, 3 do not.
How to turn it on:
- Put both AirPods in your ears.
- On iPhone, open Control Center.
- Press and hold the volume slider.
- Tap Noise Control.
- Pick Noise Cancellation.
Faster way:
Press and hold the force sensor on the AirPod stem until you hear a chime. It switches between modes.
How to check if it’s working:
- You should hear a soft change in background noise, like fans, AC, road hum.
- Voices and sudden sounds still come through some. ANC cuts steady low noise best.
- Try it near a fan or airplane-style hum. That’s where it works best.
If it still seems weak:
- Check fit. Wrong ear tips ruin ANC. On iPhone, go to Settings, Bluetooth, tap your AirPods, Ear Tip Fit Test.
- Clean the mics and speaker grilles.
- Make sure both AirPods are in. ANC is worse with one out.
- Turn off Adaptive Audio or Transparency if those are on.
- Update firmware. Put AirPods in case, plugged in, near your iPhone on Wi-Fi for 30 mins.
- Reset them if needed.
One more thing, ANC does not mute the world. It reduces noise. It won’t erase people talking next to you. If outside sound is pouring in, it’s often a fit issue or you’ve got regular AirPods by mistake. Kinda dumb naming by Apple tbh.
One thing I’d add to what @suenodelbosque said: try toggling Off, Transparency, and Noise Cancellation back to back while standing near a constant noise source, like a bathroom fan or car AC. That makes the difference way more obvious. If you’re testing with talking or TV, ANC can feel kinda underwhelming becuase it’s just not magic for voices.
Also, I slightly disagree on firmware being the first thing to worry about. Usually if ANC feels nonexistent right away, it’s more often one of these:
- You only have one bud in
- The seal is bad even if the tips feel “comfortable”
- Personalized Spatial Audio / Adaptive stuff is making it seem less clear what mode you’re in
- You accidentally bought standard AirPods and Apple’s naming made this dumb lol
Another check: go to Settings > your AirPods and see whether Noise Cancellation with One AirPod is enabled or disabled. Sometimes weird mode behavior happens there and people don’t realize it.
And if you want to be really sure it’s on, use one finger to lightly tap the outer part of the AirPod while switching modes. You can often feel the pressure change in your ear a little. Sounds weird, but it helped me figure out mine werent broken.
Before chasing settings, make sure your AirPods model actually supports ANC. Regular AirPods do not. Only AirPods Pro, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods 4 with ANC, and AirPods Max have it. That’s honestly the first thing I’d verify, and I’d put that ahead of some of the deeper troubleshooting.
A couple checks I haven’t seen stressed enough, even with @suenodelbosque covering the basics:
-
Clean the microphones and speaker mesh
Earwax or pocket lint can wreck ANC fast. Even a partial blockage makes outside sound leak in more than you’d expect. -
Disable Adaptive Audio temporarily
If your model supports it, Adaptive can make it seem like ANC is weak or inconsistent because it blends modes. Set it specifically to Noise Cancellation while testing. -
Check ear tip size again
Not just comfort. Try every size for 30 seconds each in a noisy place. The “wrong but snug” tip can outperform the “comfortable” one. -
Test with low steady noise
Plane cabin hum, fan noise, bus rumble, HVAC. ANC shines there. It will not erase voices completely. -
Reset the AirPods
If modes seem glitchy, forget them in Bluetooth settings, put them back in the case, hold the setup button until the light changes, then pair again.
Pros of AirPods ANC: great for droning background noise, easy mode switching, strong iPhone integration.
Cons of AirPods ANC: weaker against voices, fit-dependent, can feel subtle if you’re new to ANC.
If none of that changes anything, there’s a real chance you got a non-ANC model or a defective pair.
