What I mean is that ever since Windows 2000, you've had to copy Windows installation discs as an ISO or comparible disc image format. I used DVD Dycrypter to create ISO files for Windows Vista and Windows 7, and burned copies from the save file.

I know what you said. I just never did anything of the sort before with my Windblows XP install disk.

It does suck that there's nothing to be done to make what I do have useful. I would like to get Win7 installed and running. But, at the moment, I settled for XP pro x 64. That is, if it doesn't give me problems and I decide to scrap it.

Do what Olin said with the files you already have. Should work oki.

Copy from DVD to desktop, use a burning program to make them into an .ISO, burn that .ISO image to a DVD (remembering to make it bootable).

or

If you have an 8GB or bigger flash drive you could allways Make a bootable USB installer for Windows XP, Vista, 7 with WinToFlash

Steven,

i tried that with Nero. I made the files into an .iso and burned it with Nero, but didn't see anything that allowed for me to make it bootable. Maybe I missed something.

EDIT: I installed XP 64 bit edition a couple days ago and decided to try the .iso thing with the disk I have. Funny thing is that I put it into the dvd drive and it works! What the.......? Guess I'll have a go at installing it. Let you guys know what happens later. Though I still need a bootable copy of this disk for future incidences.

You can't just make a bad Windows CD/DVD copy into a bootable ISO. You need the original CD/DVD with boot files to do that, unless you're willing to search them down on the web.

The DVD I have has a boot folder and, I assume, everything else that was on the original disk. I just don't know how to make what I have bootable.

Remacno said that he read where a lot of people were having issues with the 64 bit win7. Now I am wondering if it is an issue trying to do it from within windows. I get the feeling that it won't run that way on a 32 bit win OS, since it ran on mine after installing XP 64.

BTW, it installed just fine for me after it started up. On win7 now working on all my programs.
