Overcloking the Sapphire ATI 5850

Hi everyone.
I have some q's re: my ati 5850

I attempted to OC it with MSI afterburner but i just can't seem to bump up the core clock beyond 775, what am i doing wrong?

Also the shader clock is blacked out- unaccesible.
The fan control option works fine though.

do i need to flash the card bios? or do i need to update the drivers? do let me know.

Also, whats a good range to shoot for. and what temps should i watch for?

Read that going core-1100 and memory 1200 is about ok, any numbers on the core voltages?

750 up to 1000MHz seems to be the range on the average.
Have you tried Riva Tuner or eVGA precision? Shaders should be OCable in those applications.

Try Riva Tuner but check it it has compatibility with your model, since alexey takes it´s time to do some database updates.

Sorted it out.

Overclocking the 5850 is easily attained with the AMD GPU Tool and MSI afterburner together.

AMD GPU Tool for overclocking the Core and Mem

MSI Afterburner for ramping up the voltage and fan speeds.

It's a little clunky as you need both the software, Msi's AB can't change clock speeds and AMD GPU tool can't change fan speeds.(can change voltage but maxes out at 1.088) MSI's AB also allows you to set up an personalized auto fan speed profile, so your fan will adjust it's speeds automatically but according to your parameters. And the profiles can be saved, even to hotkeys. Makes OC'ing the card a dream actually.

Of course a BIOS update to your card will allow it to be overclocked entirely with MSI's Afterburner software alone. There a risks involved with this, such as bricking your card and IMHO it's neither really worth the risk, nor the grey hairs.

These two programs will easily OC the Radeon 5850 to >950 Core, 1150 Mem.

I'm running stably at Core 960, 1150 Mem and 1187 Mv.
Pretty sweet i'd say.

BIOS update it´s not really difficult. Only make sure you´re not doing in a rainy day or whenever the AC goes off. Good OC there! Which software are you using for stability check?

Sorry for the late reply Servando, been real tied down with work.

I'm using Furmark for benchmarking, i run the extreme burn and standard stability tests for an hour or two, and keep a log of the temperatures during that time. Every so often i just come back and stare at the screen for artifacts for five to then minutes or so. Once that's done, then i load up the Heaven benchmark by Unigine, and let that run.

Of course the real world test is actual gaming and from what i've seen, my rig is rock solid at 940, 1150Mhz's on the core and the memory actually, a little correction to my earlier post. Not that far off from 960 so i'm happy.

And all this on the 5850's stock cooler.
The fan runs at a max of 55% rpm's keeping the core under 60 degrees C.

That is one hell of a card.

Sure this is a hell of a card. Best bang per buck IMHO.
55% rpm speed isn´t that loud? I can´t stand my HD 4870 @ 40% and above. A new cooler could be an option, but more preferably a new GPU. A new cooler in your case should give you less noise and some extra Mhz.

That fastest Socket 462 CPU was the AMD 3200 so yes if that is the CPU you are looking at.
