Last night I made a (slightly) terrifying discovery:
Dxdiag(nostic tool) doesn't work as such!
- It began with me installing the CoD4 demo. The instructions were quite clear that DirX9.0c was required.
- No sweat, I thought, I've had that installed for years.
- As I tried to start the game an error message showed up, reporting a missing DirX related DLL file. :(
- Repeated program start/error message.
- Fired up Dxdiag. Went through WHQL check, no problems found. Ran the 3D-tests, no problems. Looked through the file listing, didn't see the file reported missing by the game.
- Downloaded complete DirX from MS and ran the installation program. Installation failed due to some perceived registry problem. Repeated with same result.
- Downloaded the "on-line installer" and ran it without problems. New (missing) files were added to DirX.
- Tried starting the game again. Now it ran without problems! :)
Conclusion: Dxdiag doesn't do any diagnostic when it comes to files and file integrity!
Cheers
