View Full Version : Question about Ultra m998 cable harness?

I bought my Ulra m998 case based on your thorough review and I must say I'm 100% satisfied. I've never owned a case with a window before so it's a whole new experience for me. I find myself looking at it often and as such this has led me to contemplate a better arrangement of the cables inside. To help with this task I ordered some fan extensions, a Sunbeam multi-fan port (for plugging in all my fans), and a cable sleeving kit.
The reason I'm making this thread is to ask Olin (or anyone who would know) to explain for me how to utilize the cable harness in the m998? I've stared at it for a while, but I can't figure out how to use it to store my cables.
At first I thought I was nuts spending over $150 on a case, but now that everything is put together and I've had the system running for a while I'm glad I splurged. It's a gorgeous case and I'm becoming more and more anal about how everything looks inside it, lol. The only gripe I have is the expansion slots; they aren't as easy to remove and replace as they are in my old Antec Sonata case. For instance when I was putting the eSATA bracket in the large thumb screws get in the way and so I had to remove two slot covers - one for the bracket and the one right below it - in order to get the bracket screwed in.

Ok, nevermind, I figured it out. Duhhh. I have to route my cables around the back and through the holes on the cable harness. I was thinking it was there so you could wrap them around, like you do a vacuum cleaner power cord. Also I didn't realize it but I can run cables behind the m998's MB tray, especially the fan cables. Being able to take all the sides and the top off this case should make this a snap.
Sorry for wasting a thread on this. I was going to delete it, but I couldn't figure out how.

Oh, and I'm seriously considering modding a couple exhuast holes in the top of the case for more ventilation. I could drop in two 80mm fans or a single 120mm, haven't decided yet. For aesthetics I could install some slick fan guards such as these pictured here (http://www.computerpoweruser.com/editorial/fullsize.asp?guid=2A3F0888FC8143DBB762575EB46FF072&image=00843416.jpg&caption=+The+slick%2Dlooking+chrome+guards+we+used +were+only+%245+each+and+added+some+nice+flare%2E+ +%3C%2FI%3E%3C%2FB%3E%3C%2FCENTER%3E+%3C%2FTD%3E)( in black, of course).
Anyone have any advice on a project like this? Will I need a hole saw or can it be done by another means?
Would love to be able to order just the fan off this ZEROtherm Nirvana NV120 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835887011). I think this would look sweet on my Ultra120E. Unfortunately you have to buy the HS to get the fan.

What kind of inner-case temps are you seeing under load that has you ready to cut up your new case?

You can use a holesaw, a dremel, and possibly a hacksaw and file it down smooth.
As a personal preference, I'd rather use a radgrill instead of one of those fan guards, they just look more "classy" to me.
Can any of you by any chance take a picture of the back of the powerbar? I'm curious if it would be possible to make one myself

Your running a stock/non overclocked setup. Why would you want to chop that bad ass case up?
And are you still running a filter on that rear exhaust fan? Thats pretty much
useless and its prolly cutting your air flow in half.
I'm all for modding believe me, If your set on modding it get an old case and practice on it first. The dremel is the way to go too...
If your not that into modding and are just looking for better temps get rid of all those filters. They render your fans almost useless.

Well, cutting a hole in the top was just an idea. All I wanted was some feedback on that. From what I've been told my temps are pretty good, especially on the Quad. The only filters I have are on the two side vents (in the window) and one on the front intake fan. I couldn't sleep so I did some cable modding this morning and plugged a few of my peripherals into that Ultra power bar. The power bar cuts down on a lot of the dangling cables I would have had to use and I was surprised when everything fired up because there are no instructions as to where to plug things in.
Here a pic of the cable job I did. Not the greatest, but it's better than it was before. I stuck my little Sunbeam multi-port on the power bar. Looks pretty cool.
